A Unique Songwriting Journey by Train: Collaboration, Creativity and Connection from Dublin to Sligo and Back

As part of the Five Lamps Arts Festival, Train to Sligo transforms a train journey into a moving songwriting masterclass. Travelling from Dublin to Sligo and back in a single day, participants of all musical backgrounds come together to write, collaborate and create an original group song inspired by the journey, the landscape and each other.

Whether you’re an experienced songwriter, an aspiring lyricist or simply someone with a love of music, the day offers a welcoming and inspiring environment to develop your songwriting skills. Through an engaging masterclass, participants explore song structure, lyric writing, melody, collaboration and the creative process, while gaining practical insights that can be applied long after the journey ends.

The return journey becomes an informal showcase, where participants are invited to perform their own original songs and works in progress in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Alongside live music, conversation and plenty of laughter, the day concludes with the sharing of the newly written group song before arriving back in Dublin.

More than a masterclass, Train to Sligo is a memorable creative experience that brings together songwriters, musicians and music lovers from across Ireland, fostering new connections, building confidence and inspiring participants to continue writing long after the journey ends.

“Really enjoyed the trip and getting a deeper understanding of how to develop a song structure. The facilitation by Luan was excellent—not easy with such a big group of people. There was a sense of fun from the off, and it carried through for the entire day.”
— Paul Mooney

“A fantastic day out, the perfect mix of fun and musical education, really well run and genuinely beneficial to anyone with an interest in how to craft a song. Will definitely be attending the next one.”
— Mark McDonagh

“Luan created a welcoming, collaborative environment where everyone felt included and encouraged to contribute. The workshop offered a fascinating insight into songwriting, while the journey itself made for a wonderful social experience. A truly memorable day that I’d highly recommend.”
— Tony Good
