Delivering Live Performances in Day Care and Dementia Care Settings Across Ireland

For the past four years, I have been proud to deliver fortnightly performances as part of the Health & Harmony programme, an initiative of the National Concert Hall that brings professional musicians into healthcare and community settings across Ireland.

Working in Le Cairde, a dementia day care centre in Clonmel, and Golden Years, a day care centre in Thurles, each session uses live music to encourage participation, spark memories and create meaningful moments of connection.

The performances are relaxed, interactive and centred around familiar songs that invite people to sing along, reminisce and share in the experience together. Staff play an important role in every session, joining clients in creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere where music becomes a shared experience.

Music has a unique ability to connect people in ways that words often cannot. Whether through a familiar melody, a cherished lyric or the simple act of singing together, each visit aims to promote wellbeing, encourage social connection and bring moments of joy to everyone in the room.

It has been a privilege to be part of the Health & Harmony programme, witnessing first-hand the positive impact that live music can have on clients and staff alike, enriching everyday life through the shared experience of music.
